A Probe into Chinese Singular Quantifier, a new academic book by Dr. Teng Xiaochun from the Japanese department of our school, was lately published by Japan’s leading and national publishing house---Baidi press, and was valued as the most excellent academic work published by the press. Baidi press is famous for publishing academic books on Chinese linguistics and comparative linguistics between Chinese and Japanese languages.
A Probe into Chinese Singular Quantifier explored the usage of Chinese singular quantifiers, a topic which had attracted special attention in linguistic circles. Chinese singular quantifiers have many other usages besides expressing numbers. One of its usages is similar to the usage of the indefinite article in the English language, yet is also quite different from it. In the book, Dr. Teng got rid of the limitations of introspective research methods which had often been previously employed in its study. Instead, he adopted empirical research methods like experiments and investigations to collect rich data, and by carrying out objective statistics and analysis, he made a more systematic and thorough research into the special language phenomenon from brand new perspectives. Before the publication of the book, Dr. Teng had published several articles on this topic in academic journals in USA, Taiwan and etc.
In addition, Dr. Teng Xiaochun was lately invited as “visiting researcher” by Hiroshima University of Japan.
